It's a sad fact that dogs who suffer with deterioration of their joint cartilage, need life-long treatment.

The good news is that a lot can be done to relieve the painful symptoms and to help prevent further damage. Treatment plans vary depending on the severity of the joint damage. However most dogs can lead full and active lives without the need for long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication or surgery.

Many dogs enjoy remarkable improvements in mobility when given glucosamine supplements and by making changes to their diet and exercise.

Glucosamine Supplements

Veterinarians strongly recommend these supplements because they naturally heal the underlying cause of arthritis and joint pain. They are very popular with pet owners because of their overwhelming success in improving their pet's health and happiness.

How Do Glucosamine Supplements Work?

A healthy dog’s joints are protected by cartilage which acts like a cushion between the bones in a joint. Dogs’ joints take a pounding as they run, jump and play and their cartilage constantly needs to be repaired and replaced.

Dogs make Glucosamine naturally, but as they get older they produce less and their cartilage begins to wear out faster than it is replaced. It becomes thinner, giving less protection as the bones move in a joint. Further wear or damage to the cartilage causes the bones to begin to rub against each other resulting in inflammation and pain.

This is the underlying cause of joint pain.

Glucosamine is the essential building block for healthy cartilage. Glucosamine supplements enable dogs struggling with joint pain, to naturally make more cartilage. This rebuilds and repairs the cartilage cushion between the bones in a joint. The bones stop grinding painfully together, producing wonderful improvements in mobility and happiness.

The best glucosamine supplements have additional ingredients like Chondroitin Sulfate, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and Hyaluronic Acid. These multiply the benefits of glucosamine.

Chondroitin

Chondroitin helps glucosamine to rebuild cartilage. It also protects joints from destructive enzymes that break down cartilage. The job of these enzymes is to remove damaged cartilage from joints. However following injury or abnormal wear they become too active, and destroy healthy cartilage, increasing joint pain. Chondroitin reduces the activity of these destructive enzymes, allowing new cartilage to repair the joint.

Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM)

MSM strengthens the connective tissue that support joints. This helps weakened joints to become stronger. It's produced, by kelp in the ocean, and is a naturally powerful anti-inflammatory.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is an important component of joint fluid, increasing its viscosity which helps to reduce inflammation.

When Should You Give Glucosamine Supplements To Your Pet?

The problem with arthritis and joint pain is that they develop very slowly, gradually impairing a dog's mobility.

Dogs can't tell us when their start to feel stiff and sore. It's up to us to spot the symptoms, but our furry friends don't make it easy! Their natural lust for life hides the symptoms, because they love being active and will continue to walk, run and play despite being in pain.

These two issues make it very hard to notice the early signs of joint problems and prevent further damage.

As a result millions of US dogs are suffering with joint pain.

When the symptoms do become noticeable, many pet parents assume they are normal signs of ageing that can't be treated.

My Professional Advice

I'm a pet-loving pharmacist, and I now dedicate my professional expertise to the health and happiness of our pets.

Over 35 years ago, I became a pet brother to a magnificent Bernese Mountain dog, called Morris, who endured the painful misery of arthritis. I can't believe it was over 35 years ago!

Sadly in those days we didn't know about the benefits of glucosamine. It's the memory of his discomfort and suffering as he aged, that inspired me to search for natural supplements to help other dogs.

I've also been a pet parent to two Golden Retrievers, Ben and Max, who also had joint problems. They were both given glucosamine and never suffered like Morris.

Glucosamine is Safe

It's a fact that dogs produce their own glucosamine naturally. The issue is whether they produce enough to protect their joints. It's safe to give glucosamine supplements to dogs because it's naturally present in their bodies.

So here's what I recommend:

1. If you have noticed any of these symptoms in your dog:

  • Stiffness, particularly when getting up from rest
  • Appears reluctant to walk, jump or play
  • Sleeping and resting more
  • Lagging behind on walks
  • Taking longer to settle
  • Licking or chewing a particular joint
  • Limping or protecting certain joints

I would give them a glucosamine supplement because it will help to repair their joints. I would also recommend talking to your veterinarian about a treatment plan.

2. If your dog has any of the following risk factors:

  • aged 7+
  • belongs to a breed prone to joint problems
  • is particularly active
  • had a joint infection
  • overweight
  • had a ligament, tendon or muscle injury
  • suffered a dislocation, trauma or fracture involving a joint

Even if they have no symptoms of joint discomfort, I would give them a glucosamine supplement to protect their joints.

3. Spot The Difference

Here's my last recommendation. If you have even the slightest suspicion that your dog's joints aren't working as they should, I would give them glucosamine. Here's why - remember the problem with arthritis and joint pain is that they develop very slowly and the symptoms are very hard to spot. So give them a glucosamine supplement for 4 to 6 weeks and see if your notice a difference in their energy, activity and happiness.

If you do, you've probably confirmed a problem with their joints super-early, and can discuss a treatment plan with your veterinarian.
